The Vancouver Island division publishes 18 award-winning community newspapers, reaching more than 279,165 homes and businesses stretching the length of Vancouver Island, from Victoria in the south, to Port Hardy in the north.
Founded in 1985 by David Black, the division as it grew came to include some of the Island's oldest and most-respected papers; the Cowichan News Leader began in 1905, the Ladysmith Chronicle was founded in 1908, the Peninsula News Review, in Sidney, first published in 1912.
The Vancouver Island division serves the whole spectrum of Vancouver Island markets, from small seaside towns like Sooke, to urban Victoria and its suburbs, to fast-growing Nanaimo, Courtenay and Campbell River. But no matter the size of the community, every Black Press paper is guided by the principle that community papers must be strong community members, supporting their readers and advertisers through good times and bad. |
